The Rose of Tralee
Rose of Tralee International Festival is one of Ireland's largest and (0) longest running festivals. The heart of the festival is the beauty competition and the selection of the "Rose of Tralee", which (1) young women with Irish ancestors from around the world to the island.
The festival takes (2) in the town of Tralee in beautiful County Kerry (3) women come together come together to celebrate their Irish roots. At the end of the festival one of (4) women is crowned "The Rose".
When the festival started in 1959 it was only a local beauty competition, but in the late 1960's with TV broadcasting "The Rose of Tralee" (5) one of the most important events in Ireland. The parade of the Roses of Tralee through several streets is watched by more (6) a million people on TV and it is followed by open air concerts in the town's squares and local pubs.
In the (7) the event has always attracted well known musicians and actors. The festival is based on the love song "The Rose of Tralee" (8) William Mulchinock.
The story behind the famous song is of a wealthy 19th century storekeeper (9) fell in love with Mary O'Connor from Tralee but because of the (10) in social class between the two families, their love was forbidden. William was broken-hearted and expressed his love in the sond "Rose of Tralee".
