Text 1
Travelling to New York City can be expensive, but there is a taxi driver who can cut your hotel costs dramatically. His customers can sleep in the back of a taxi cab for only 40 dollars a night! The taxi is in the city center - only three stops from Time Square and one stop from Grand Central Station. People who try it also have a great view of Manhattan. The so-called 'rolling rooms' already attracted a lot of attention from tourists. There is, however, one little problem: there is no bathroom in the taxi, but the customers can use the bathroom of some restaurants nearby.

A former ice cream seller and milkman aged 103 is believed to be Britain's oldest driver. Giovanni Rozzo has been driving for more than eighty years and said he has no intention of hanging up his car keys. The grandfather of four, from Cambridge, has only ever had two speeding fines, one parking ticket - and has never had an accident during his motoring career and never had any trouble with the police. He said "I've been driving since I was 20. I was a clerk in the Italian army at the time, so I started driving military vehicles in Italy before I came to England, and then drove my van for many, many years. I'm still fit, and my eyesight is good, and I feel confident as a driver.

It is becoming more and more difficult for workers to keep job and holiday apart and really relax. Many employees answer or write e-mails on the train to and from work and at home after work. A lot of people even check their work e-mails when they go an vacation to other countries. This might be changing. The German carmaker Daimler is giving its workers the choice not to receive e-mails when they are on vacation. This means employees will be able to relax on the beach instead of dealing with problems in their inbox. Daimler employees can choose to auto-delete all work e-mails while on vacation.

Twenty per cent of the workers said they did not take a lunch break. They worked through their lunch hour. Half of the people took a break but ate their lunch at their desk and surfed the Internet, answered e-mails or went an Facebook. One in five people left the workplace at lunchtime to go shopping or get some air, while three per cent went to the gym.

Text 5
A New York man is trying to identify the police officer who gave him a ride to a successful job interview to make good on a promise of lunch. James Roberts, 58, said he was heading for a job interview for a position at a LaGuardia Airport car rental company and he was so excited that he didn't realize until getting off the bus that the interview was actually at another location - 6 miles away. Roberts said a police officer asked what was wrong. He said he explained his situation to the officer, who then asked him 'What time do you have to be there?' and Roberts said, '1 o'clock,' and the officer said 'You're not going to make it there. Get in the car.' 'Last thing he said to me was 'Good luck and God bless you'. I said 'I owe you lunch." Roberts, who got the job, said he wants to make good on his promise, but he doesn't know the officer's name.

Part 2

The following article deals with a film about Solomon Northup. Read the article and do the task.
$\,$
The film 12 Years a Slave tells the true story of a free black man from one of the Northern states where there was no slavery at the time. During the 1850s Solomon Northup was drugged, kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South. The film is based on a book of the same name, which was written by Solomon after his escape.
$\,$
In an interview the movie's director Steve McQueen told journalists that everything he needed was there in Solomon's story - in black and white. 'The story was like a film script, ready to be shot.' he said. The musician Solomon tells how in 1841, aged 33, he became a victim of two white men whom he had just met and who pretended to offer him a job in a travelling circus in Washington DC. But when they got there with Solomon, they drugged, kidnapped and sold him to a slave trader called Burch.
$\,$
Despite having papers showing that he was a free man, he was then sold on to plantations in New Orleans and Louisiana, where he was forced to pick cotton and was seriously beaten. Towards the end of his captivity Solomon met a Canadian carpenter who helped him to write letters to his family in Saratoga Springs. Fortunately, a friend of the family had searched for Solomon for years. Solomon was rescued and taken back to his family. He returned home for an emotional reunion with his wife Anne, his daughters Margaret and Elizabeth, and his grandson whom he had never met before. Solomon's book and the film end here.
$\,$
The film 12 Years a Slave stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup. He was born on 10 July 1977. He is a British actor of film, television, and theatre and has received many awards. Ejiofor began acting in school plays at the age of thirteen at Dulwich College and joined the National Youth Theatre. He then got into the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art but had to leave after his first year, when he got a role in Steven Spielberg's film Amistad. Steve McQueen said: 'Chiwetel Ejiofor was always going to be Solomon Northup for me. He was the only person who could do it.'
$\,$
At the Toronto International Film Festival, Ejiofor said: 'I briefly hesitated about playing Solomon Northup. But with Steve as the director, I wasn't afraid to take on the role of Solomon'. As part of his preparation, Ejiofor learned to play the violin, collected slave stories, and, exactly like the slave Solomon Northup, he did some hard work like picking cotton.
$\,$
In America many people have asked why it has taken so lang for a film to do justice to the appalling misery of African America's slave ancestors and why no US filmmakers have succeeded before in confronting their country's shameful past with such power and historical accuracy. The historical adviser an the film was the distinguished historian and Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, who was also the adviser an Steven Spielberg's film of slave revolt, Amistad.
$\,$
A movie-lover who had childhood dreams of becoming a film director, Gates has called 12 Years a Slave 'the most vivid and authentic portrayal of American slavery ever captured on screen'. The competition for that title has not been great. As a historian, Gates knows better than most that American slave history has too often been sentimentalized on film, including in such classics as Gone With the Wind. 'Steve's film,' Gates says, 'is a refreshingly honest description of slavery as it really was.'
