a) Living healthily
Subject: Attitude towards nutrition and health
Dear Sir or Madam,
I saw your advert about the consumer research in the magazine "Lifestyle Now" and I am interested in taking part in your research. Since one year I am watching exactly what I eat and I am trying to live as healthy as possible. So, I am convinced that a healthy lifestyle doesn't need to be a burden - in fact, it is just fun! This is why I want to take part in your survey. Let me explain to you in more detail why I think that my opinion should matter to you.
Many people tend to live unhealthy out of different reasons. First, they think it is too complicated which includes buying the right groceries that are not processed and cooking them properly. People also believe that healthy or organic groceries are much more expensive. But this is just not true! You can get vegetables and fruit at discounter supermarkets as well! You could even get frozen vegetables or fruit, which is even cheaper. When you compare the prices of a store-bought meal and a self-cooked meal with just the ingredients bought at the store, you will quickly see that cooking the meals by yourself is much cheaper than buying one. If you prepare it by yourself, you also know exactly what is in there and you can decide how sweet, salty or spicy it will taste. Also, the nutritional value is much higher whith freshly prepared and cooked meals. Store-bought meals need to be heated up in order to kill the bacteria - however, the vitamins in there get destroyed as well. So basically, eating such a meal doesn't do anything for you, except filling your belly with junk.
Yet, I thought the same way until my school offered a cooking class. I was really interested in that class and afterwards, I started reading blogs about healthy cooking and got inspired by the recipes. It just so easy to find great recipes online! And preparing them is so much fun, too. I would even say that cooking turned into a new hobby for me - for me, it is relaxing and I just love eating!
Some may now wonder what I do, when I am craving something sweet. At the beginning, it is hard to stop eating or buying sweets. But I found a way to get something sweet without buying candy. I just make my own candy using natural sweeteners like maple syrup or honey for instance! However, there is one thing that bothers me. In Germany, the nutritional values are not as clearly indicated on the packaging of the product, so it is not quite clear how many calories, vitamins … a product has. This is something that should be changed so it gets easier for people to understand the nutritional values of certain products.
I hope this helped you with your consumer research. In case you have any more questions, feel free to contact me!
b) Wakeboarding and roller derby - modern sports of our times
If I die before I wake - at least in heaven I can skate
Songs about skating have existed for at least 15 years! But why though? Skating became really popular in the 70s and ever since Tony Hawk landed the first 900 trick in 1999, skateboarding has become more and more popular. Also, the skateboarding lifestyle became a trend. The shoes and clothes skateboarders wear became stylish as well - nowadays, many teenagers own shoes from the brand "Vans". Many cities built halfpipes or skaterparks for their skateboarders, too.
There have also been new developments in the sport skateboarding! People created so-called longboards in order to cruise around cities. Those things can get quite speedy and are great to get from one point to another in no time. With their different designs, everyone can find a longboard that they love and that they will use for a long time. The greatest achievement with regard to skateboarding is that it became part of the Olympic Games in 2016 and will be one of the sports represented at the Olympic Games in Japan in 2020. Isn't it great that people will be able to watch this kind of sport at the Olympic games? This means that skateboarding is recognized on a world-wide basis as a sport - just the same as swimming, running or artistic gymnastics.
Not only is skateboarding a cool sport to do yourself, it is also awesome to just watch it! Recently, some youtube videos have gone viral showing a girl with her longboard. But she is not just riding her longboard to get around the city, she is dancing on it! This is one of the hardest ways to ride a skateboard or longboard because you always have to watch your balance and because you are always on the move or because your feet are always moving in addition to the movements of the longboard. But it looks so graceful and fancy! The clicks on the videos show that people could watch this girl on her longboard for hours and would not get bored - it is clearly hypnotizing!
c) "No man is an island"
This has not been one of my best days. School was super hard, I forgot my homework at home and Mr. Bauer was super angry with me because of that. Because I forgot my homework for the third time already, I had to come to the front and do a short quiz - he asked me some really difficult questions about the French Revolution and I hate that topic so much! But thank god I read an article about the French Revolution just yesterday. So I was able to answer most of his questions and I was really proud of myself. And I will never forget my homework again…
When I was back home, I was watching an episode of "Game of Thrones" and Daenerys was talking about how no man is an island. That got me thinking…
At first, I didn't really get what she was saying and I couldn't put it in a context. I didn't even realize the importance of that quote until later today. What Daenerys was trying to say is that humans rely on one another and that no one can live by just him- or herself.
I mean, we are dependent from someone else when we are born already. We depend on our parents to feed us and to talk to us and to give us love. I heard about an experiment from the 19th
century. Newborn babies were put in a room and were just being fed - no one talked to them, no one hugged them or carried them around and the babies died soon after! So this means that from the very start of our lifes, we depend on someone. And even when we grow older and would be able to care for ourselves, we still depend on someone else. But it is not really dependence, we will most likely have a job and no one would need to feed us or pay for our home or whatever. But still, human beings have needs - to be loved, to communicate, to have a social network, to have someone to share experiences with. If we would all live by ourselves as if we were on an island - where would the fun be? Isn't life about making experiences and sharing them with someone we love?
Imagining living all by myself, with no one around me or close to me just sounds terrible to me. No warmth, no social surroundings - not a happy thought…
We need people in our lives, people with whom we want to spend time with and with whom we want to talk to when we have a bad day. And this is why no man can be an island.
