Emma Lazarus was an American writer and poet of the 19th century.
She is best known for her sonnet "The New Colossus", which features the following lines:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door. "
These lines are inscribed on a bronze placque in the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty in New York City.
