Northern Ireland Conflict
The Northern Ireland Conflict (also known as the Troubles) was a thirty-year conflict that started in 1968. At the heart of the conflict lay the constitutional status of Northern Ireland.
Two factions formed: the unionists, who wanted to remain part of the UK (Protestant) and the nationalists, who wanted Northern Ireland to become part of the Republic of Ireland (Catholic).
The conflict was primarily political, it was not a religious conflict.
