Part 2-5

UNICEF – Almost 80 Years of Help for Children

1
UNICEF - its full name is ”The United Nations International Children’s
2
Emergency Fund“ - works in the world’s toughest places to reach the
3
poorest children there. UNICEF protects the rights of every child,
4
everywhere. In more than 190 countries and territories, UNICEF does
5
whatever it takes to help children survive and live, from early childhood
6
through their youth. UNICEF offers help in South-American countries like
7
Ecuador, Brazil and Haiti as well as in countries in Asia such as India, Bangladesh and
8
Indonesia. They support children in African countries like Somalia, Uganda and
Abbildung
9
Mozambique as well as children in European countries such as Romania, Kosovo, Ukraine
10
and even Germany.
11
How does UNICEF support children? UNICEF cares about their living conditions and
12
supplies fresh water - most of the children in need don’t have bathrooms and toilets as we
13
are used to. They provide food and medicine. They offer HIV prevention and treatment for
14
mothers and babies. They protect children and teenagers from violence and exploitation.
15
Moreover, UNICEF tries to provide good education, because education is the main key to
16
standing on your own feet. During crisis and emergencies, UNICEF brings lifesaving help
17
and hope to children and families - non-political and neutral. But they are never neutral when
18
it comes to children’s rights and caring about their lives and futures.
19
UNICEF was established in 1946, as a result of World War II. The idea was clear: to help
20
children and young people in need all over Europe - no matter what role their country had
21
played in the war. UNICEF has always wanted to protect the rights of the youngest citizens
22
of all, as they are the weakest ones. The story of UNICEF is a story of how much
23
good the human family can do.
24
UNICEF's programmes are supported by voluntary donations from governments,
25
organisations, foundations, private groups and individuals. UNICEF cooperates closely with
26
their partners and makes sure that every dollar spent has a maximum effect on children.
27
Since UNICEF was founded, they have helped children in humanitarian crises, wars,
28
fightings and natural disasters. For nearly 80 years, UNICEF has been working nonstop for
29
childrens‘ rights. Whoever they are and wherever they live.
