a)
- the quote „Alienation is a form of living death“ by Martin Luther king describes the result of alienation from the social society
- alienation thus expresses the feeling of being an outsider and not part of a social group or society in general
- the terminology „living death“ is a contradiction in itself; it unites two contradictory stages of life - meaning to live a zombie like life. A life that is not worth living, where quality of life and well-being are extremely impaired

- was criticized and rejected by his father for not being as sporty, manly, healthy, and strong enough as his classmates or other children his age for instance
- Carl considers his son as weak and despises him for it and makes him fight his only friend Silas in the end
- due to his rather introverted character and isolated interests like reading, he distances himself from fellow students
- is considered a "weirdo" and even though he always desperately tried to belong and fit in, was he bullied at school from an early age on

(possible) Conclusion
b)
- in front of the picture is a fish bowl full of water with five figures who clearly represent the royal family
- the queen stands in the middle flanked by her inheritance, on the very outside stand their wives
- in the back of the picture there are two figures running away from the fishbowl holding hands and leaving wet footprints
- the man with bright ginger hair and the woman with long black hair are meant to represent Prince Harry and his wife Meghan
Introduction
Description of the cartoon
Description of the cartoon
- the fishbowl can be understood as a prison of the Royal family, which not only isolates them from the "real" world and society but also exposes them to the constant observation of it
- Queen Elizabeth stands in the middle of the family, as she is the ruling monarch
- the fishbowl only contains confined space and leaves only little room for movement, symbolizing how much the role of being part of the royal family is restrictive and constricts all its members in all areas of life.
- strict rules to be followed
behavior is observed by the public day and night / at all times
- free expression of opinion, free choice of profession, and speaking their free minds are not possible
Main Body
Interpretation
The fishbowl
Interpretation
The fishbowl
- standing there in a stiff posture
- all family members are dressed very formally
men in suits and women in costumes and hats
- the old-fashioned look of the royal family is an indication that the institution has become an outdated concept
- the missing harmony and the lack of interpersonal interaction and communication are indicated by them not looking at each other
- the angry expressions are dedicated to Harry and Meghan, who, by leaving the Royal family, are turning their backs not only on the family but also on their royal duties
Appearance of the Royal family
- Harry and Meghan are holding hands while they run into the unknown leaving the suffocating fishbowl, royal family and the captivity of the royal duties
- leaving gives them a sense of freedom
they breathe a sigh of relief after leaving the fishbowl and with it an environment of racist comments and agitation by the media towards a self-determined life
- while Meghan doesn't take a second look back, prince harry illustrated with a turned head to possibly take one last glimpse at his family
Harry and Meghan
- the departure of Harry and Meghan from the royal family has caused a great outcry, especially among the British society
- wheras critics, argue that leaving the royal house represents a betrayal of the crown
- supporters, however, state that everyone should have the possibility of a self-determined life and the opportunity to freely express their opinions, choose their profession as well as their future
- this shows that the monarchy is an outdated concept that no longer corresponds to the times
- in our new world everyone should have the opportunity to realize themselves, do the job that is made for them and not haveing to perform tasks just because they ought to
- furthermore, it can be argued that no human being should be forced to live in a hostile environment characterized by racist statements and hateful remarks
- the renunciation of the crown is a phenomenon that can be observed in various royal houses, such as King Edward VIII of the British royal house or Prince Carl Johan of the Swedish royal house, who renounced all royal privileges for love.
Comment
- all in all, it can be summarized that the concept of royal family homes is becoming more and more obsolete and that already in the past royals broke out of the cage of the crown to lead a self-determined life
- each member of society should be allowed to shape their future according to their wishes and love whoever one desires
- and not be forced into a concept just because they are born into it
Conclusion
