Voting age debate in Germany
Hi Naziah,
I hope you're doing well! It was really interesting to hear that your social studies class is discussing the voting age. Since you asked about Germany, here's a quick overview of the current debate.
In Germany, people usually have to be 18 years old to vote in national elections. However, the discussion about lowering the voting age to 16 has been going on for many years. Today, the rules are different depending on the type of election. In many German states, 16-year-olds are already allowed to vote in local elections. In some states, they can also vote in state elections, and since 2024 they have also been allowed to vote in the European elections.
Many political scientists believe that Germany should have the same minimum voting age for all elections. Several political parties also support lowering the voting age to 16 for national elections. However, changing the law would require a two-thirds majority in parliament, and at the moment there is not enough political support for that.
People who oppose lowering the voting age argue that teenagers under 18 are often not experienced or mature enough to make well-informed political decisions. They also believe that the voting age should match the age at which people become fully legally responsible.
Supporters see things differently. They argue that young people should have a say because political decisions will strongly affect their future. They also believe that voting at a younger age could encourage more teenagers to become interested in politics and participate in democracy.
According to several studies mentioned in the article, 16- and 17-year-olds are just as capable as older voters of choosing the party that best represents their own political views. Researchers also found that they know almost as much about politics and are nearly as interested in political issues as slightly older first-time voters. Therefore, there is no clear evidence that they are less prepared to vote than 18-year-olds.
Overall, the debate is still ongoing. Although there are good arguments on both sides, changing the voting age for national elections does not seem likely in the near future.
I hope this helps with your project! Let me know what the debate is like in the US.
Best wishes,
Ashton
