Why People Choose Shared Accommodation
Today, many young people live in shared accommodation, especially while studying. However, this way of living is much older than many people think. In Germany, the reasons for living in a shared flat have changed over time.
In the past, living together with people outside the immediate family was completely normal. Even in Roman times and throughout the Middle Ages, households often included relatives, servants and other people. It was only during the nineteenth century that the nuclear family increasingly began to live on its own. After the 1950s and 1960s, this became the typical lifestyle, as household technology replaced domestic servants and many families followed the traditional model of the working father and the stay-at-home mother.
Shared accommodation became popular again during the German student movement of the late 1960s. At that time, many young people saw shared flats as more than just a place to live. They wanted to create a different kind of society based on equality instead of traditional family hierarchies. Although this idea did not change society as they had hoped, shared living remained an important housing option.
Today, most people choose shared accommodation for practical reasons rather than political ones. Many students cannot afford to rent a flat on their own, especially in large cities where housing is expensive. As a result, living in a shared flat has become the most popular form of accommodation among German university students. Adults with full-time jobs also decide to share a home because it is more affordable and suits a flexible lifestyle.
However, money is not the only reason. Some people deliberately choose a simple and minimalist lifestyle with fewer possessions. For them, living in a shared flat reflects their personal values. Others enjoy the social side of shared accommodation. A shared flat can provide company and support without the close obligations of family life. It offers a sense of community while still allowing everyone to live independently.
Overall, the reasons for living in shared accommodation have changed considerably. While it was once the normal way of organising everyday life and later became a political statement, today it is mainly a practical solution. At the same time, many people still value the sense of community and the lifestyle that shared living can offer.
