The History and Importance of Earth Day

1
Our planet is an amazing place, but it needs our help to survive! That's why each year on
2
April 22, more than a billion people celebrate Earth Day to protect the planet from things
4
like pollution and deforestation. By taking part in activities such as picking up litter and
5
planting trees, we're making our world a happier, healthier place to live.
7
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator from Wisconsin
8
organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues.
10
Rallies took place across the country and, by the end of the year, the U.S. government
11
had created the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1990, Earth Day had become an
12
event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe."
14
What can be done? There are a lot of possibilities to do something actively. For example,
15
the number of garbage trucks each year would stretch halfway to the moon. Toilet paper
16
tubes, made from cardboard, take two months to decompose in a landfill. A plastic bottle
17
sticks around for way longer - it can take more than 450 years to break down! Before you
18
throw something away, think about whether it can be recycled or repurposed. You can also
19
limit waste by reducing the amount of things you buy.
20
Researchers estimate-roughly 15 billion trees in the world are cut down each year, so help
21
by planting a tree of your own. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen for people
22
to breathe. They also provide shelter and food for animals such as squirrels and owls.
23
Depending on where trees are planted, their shade can even reduce the need for
24
air-conditioning in hotter months. How many more reasons do we need to go green?
25
Besides - electricity doesn't just happen - it has to be produced from things around us. Does
26
that lamp really need to be on while the sun is out? A lot of times it comes from fossil fuels
27
(such as coal, oil, or natural gas) that contribute to climate change. But electricity can also
28
be made from renewable sources like wind, water, the sun, and even elephant dungl No
29
matter where it's coming from, we should try conserving electrical energy by using only what
30
we need.
31
One of the most crucial points is water. lt might seem like it's everywhere, but clean,
32
drin kable water is a limited resource. In fact, less than one percent of the water on earth can
33
be used by humans. The rest. is either too salty or too difficult to access. Turning
34
off the tap when you brush your teeth can conserve up to eight gallons of water a day.
35
So, challenge yourself to take a shorter shower and still get clean to help save even more
36
water.
