1
This is a story about turning trash into treasure. And
2
it is a story about kids without hope who get the
3
chance to flee from their situation. It centers around
4
a tiny South American community called Cateura on
5
the outskirts of Asunción in Paraguay. It is built
6
around a landfill, where 1,000 tonnes of garbage
7
are dumped every day.
8
There are only 20,000 people living in Cateura and most of them work as trash pickers at
9
the landfill. The community is said to be one of the poorest slums in South America, and
10
more than 2,500 families who live there rely on trash to survive. They collect anything and
11
everything that can be recycled. Their houses are made from recycled garbage. The
12
children’s toys are made from recycled garbage. Their clothes are made from clothing found
13
in the landfill. And so are their musical instruments.
14
In 2006 Favio Chavez started a small children’s orchestra with instruments made from oil
15
drums, paint cans, roasting pans, cutlery and wood pallets. All of the instruments were
16
pulled from the giant pile of garbage. Chavez, a former music teacher, who now works as a
17
technician at the landfill, noticed that the children get up in the morning and they go to the
18
landfill and sort through it, looking for anything they can sell, use or recycle. He believed
19
children needed music and the instruments could be imitations of the real thing. If they
20
learned on the recycled instruments – the power of music would make them understand: we
21
are all the same. For him, music is a basic need and his mission is to give that need to the
22
children of Cateura.
23
One might never know it by just listening, but the melodies of the Recycled Orchestra come
24
from objects found in a garbage dump. “I never would have imagined that I would be playing
25
an instrument, much less one made out of garbage,” said bass player Brandon Cabone.
26
Cabone and other members of the Recycled Orchestra are from Cateura, Paraguay.
27
There are 300 students in the Recycled Orchestra. A dozen or more travel at a time from all
28
over the world. They carry their message that “because you have nothing, it’s not an excuse
29
to do nothing”. For example, they came to Vancouver, where they played at a handful of
30
schools and two fundraising concerts, after the local charity “Instruments Beyond Borders
31
had raised the money to bring them to Vancouver. They also met royalty – and even toured
32
South America with Metallica, playing on stage with the heavy metal band.
33
Even though these children have travelled the world – Paraguay is their home. They spread
34
their message so they can return to the slum with the hope of building a proper schoolhouse
35
and a future. This orchestra and the idea behind it finally is an inspiration to a lot of musicians
36
around the world and a helping hand for the children in Paraguay. Favio Chavez was right,
37
when he stated in an interview: “The world sends us garbage – we send back music.”
