Artificial Intelligence (AI)
1
Can computers think? Do robots have the same characteristics as humans? Which is more
2
intelligent - man or machine? The scientific debate is ongoing. People can do many things, like
3
thinking, making plans, learning, and talking. Can computers and machines do the same
4
things? Basically, artificial intelligence (AI) means that a machine can show intelligence.
5
With all the robots, computers, and other fancy technology these days, it's easy to think that
6
artificial intelligence is something brand new. However, people have been working on intelligent
7
machines for years. One of the more famous names associated with the field is Alan Turing
8
who believed that one thing people can do with Al is play games. Turing wrote the first
9
computer chess program in 1950. He believed that if a machine could pretend to be human,
10
then it was intelligent.
11
But it was only in 1958 that a chess program defeated a person for the first time. There are
12
machines that play chess really well, and they don't cost much. Computers started
13
participating in tournaments and had some wins and losses. As time went on, computers
14
started winning more frequently. Today, computers can analyse billions of options and positions.
15
Even though chess champions are incredibly skilled, they can't match that level of analytical
16
power.
17
The public has become more and more aware of the possibilities. The movie industry has
18
made several films about the topic. One popular film was "I, Robot". Another was simply titled
19
"A.I. - Artificial Intelligence". People have also started buying toys and tools that display
20
certain features. The "Furby" was a popular robotic toy that eventually learned to speak
21
English.
22
A new online revolution has begun with chatbots that you can talk to, and it's gaining
23
popularity rapidly, not only as Siri or Alexa. It began on 30th November 2022 when the
24
tech company OpenAl released ChatGPT. It can provide the answer to pretty much any
25
request you make, in perfect grammar. If you want a 300-word essay about a movie written in
26
the style of Shakespeare, you will get it. ChatGPT has spread like wildfire across social
27
media. Experts have called it a game changer. On 6th February 2023, Google released its
28
own chatbot named Bard as a rival to ChatGPT.
29
There are many questions about how chatbots will change our world. Teachers are concerned
30
about "the end of homework" because bots can quickly give well-written essays. Workers are
31
concerned that bots will threaten all kinds of jobs. Google calmed people's fears about the
32
possible threats of chatbots. It said: "Artificial intelligence can deepen our understanding of
33
information and turn it into useful knowledge more efficiently – making it easier for people to get
34
things done." If Al doesn't need a human to get things done, is it smarter than a human? There
35
are still many unanswered questions in this field.
