Germany’s democratic development and the responsibility to protect democracy
Dear Emily,
I hope you’re doing well. You mentioned that you’re writing a paper about how Germans reflect on their history and deal with current global challenges. I recently read an article by former German President Joachim Gauck that I think could be very useful for your research.
In the article, Gauck argues that Germany should not only be remembered for the crimes of the Nazi era but also for its remarkable democratic development after the Second World War. According to him, West Germany successfully established the rule of law, built a stable democracy and created an active civil society. He even describes this transformation as a “democratic miracle” because the country developed into the strongest democracy in its history despite its difficult past.
Gauck also points out that East Germans had a very different experience. Unlike people in the West, they lived under a communist dictatorship for more than forty years. Nevertheless, the peaceful revolution of 1989 proved that many East Germans had never given up their desire for freedom and democratic participation. Their slogan “We are the people” symbolised their demand for political rights and played a key role in German reunification.
Another important message of the article is that Germans should be proud of what they have achieved together. Gauck believes that democratic success belongs to ordinary citizens and should not be exploited by nationalist groups. In his opinion, true patriotism is based on democratic values rather than feelings of superiority over others.
At the same time, Gauck warns that democracy is facing serious challenges today. He mentions the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and increasing global instability caused by authoritarian states. However, instead of giving in to fear or looking for authoritarian solutions, he encourages people to develop new political ideas and actively solve current problems.
Most importantly, Gauck stresses that democracy can only survive if citizens are willing to defend it. Drawing on his own experience of living under an authoritarian regime, he reminds readers how valuable fundamental rights such as freedom of speech, free elections and an independent judiciary are. He especially hopes that younger generations, who have never experienced life without these freedoms, will not take democracy for granted.
Overall, Gauck presents Germany as a country that has learned important lessons from its past and built a strong democratic system. However, he also makes it clear that democracy is never guaranteed. It depends on responsible citizens who are prepared to protect freedom and democratic values whenever they are threatened.
I hope this summary helps with your paper. Let me know if you'd like to discuss the article in more detail.
Best wishes,
Lena
