Dear Hayley,
I’m glad you chose the tradition of travelling journeymen for your presentation. It is a really interesting part of German culture, and I’m happy to help you with some background information.
Travelling journeymen are craftsmen who go on a journey after finishing their training. They can often be recognised by their traditional clothes: a hat, a walking stick, a small bundle and a special outfit called “Kluft”. The colour of the outfit shows which craft they belong to. For example, carpenters usually wear black.
The tradition goes back to the late Middle Ages. In the past, young craftsmen had to travel if they wanted to become masters. The aim was to gain work experience, learn new techniques and become more independent. They were also supposed to find work away from their home region so that they would not compete with their former masters.
Even today, some craftsmen still go travelling. This tradition is called “Walz” in German. It is possible in about 35 crafts, for example for carpenters, bakers, bricklayers, goldsmiths, cooks or tailors. Since 2014, the Walz has been part of Germany’s intangible UNESCO cultural heritage.
There are still strict rules. A travelling journeyman must have completed professional training, must be unmarried and must have no debts. The journey usually lasts two or three years and one day. During this time, the journeyman is not allowed to come closer than 50 kilometres to his or her hometown.
Today, there are probably about 450 to 550 travelling journeymen. There are no official statistics, but about 10 to 20 percent of them are estimated to be women. They travel through Germany and sometimes other countries, work for different employers and often receive wages as well as food and accommodation.
The tradition is not only about improving craft skills. Many journeymen say that the most important part is meeting different people, learning how to deal with difficult situations and becoming more self-confident. In this way, the Walz may seem old-fashioned at first, but the idea of living and working in different places is actually quite modern.
I hope this helps you with your presentation. Let me know if you need anything else.
Best wishes,
Sophie
