In the heart of Upper Franconia, Bavaria, a regional association has launched an ambitious project that brings together the concepts of co-working and co-living. Under the slogan “Work. Land. Life – Landleben auf Probe”, ten city dwellers will be given the opportunity to live rent-free for two months in the small rural community of Nordhalben, located in the beautiful Franconian Forest Nature Park, while continuing their jobs remotely.
The project is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance and Home Affairs and is part of a scientific study led by a professor of regional development. Its aim is to show that rural regions can offer modern, innovative working conditions equal to those in big cities. The organizers hope to create a “toolbox” for other rural communities that want to bring new life into their towns. They also want participants to engage actively with the community, whether by joining local clubs or helping to organize events.
Interest in the project has been overwhelming, with around 100 applications from across Germany and even from abroad. Applicants range from IT professionals to marketing experts, from young singles to people over 60. The final selection will ensure a balanced mix of gender, age, and interests. The existing “Nordhalben Village” facilities provide co-working spaces, private apartments, and shared areas, while additional housing is available for families and couples.
For the participants, motivations include escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, discovering something new, and experiencing the warmth and traditions of rural life. For the organizers, it is about strengthening rural communities, promoting exchange between city and country, and proving that innovation is not limited to urban areas.
After the two-month trial, interviews and evaluations will explore the impact on well-being and the mutual benefits for both sides. If the results are positive, the project could be repeated in other communities and might serve as a blueprint for rural development across the country.
