New York, wait for me!

A Bright lights, thousands of people, everyone is rushing to get somewhere. Sky-

scrapers, lots of yellow taxis in the street, the smell of coffee and hotdogs – this is New
3
York. It is the perfect place to make a brand-new start. Nobody cares about your past
4
here, nobody even knows your name. I love New York! I would love to live in New
5
York.

B I shared this dream with my best friend Emma, and when we were 16 we went to
7
see our favorite city for the first time. After a four-hour bus journey, we finally saw
8
Manhattan’s skyscrapers in the distance. The buildings got taller and taller and there
9
was more and more traffic and noise. We arrived in Manhattan at about 10 a.m., got
10
off the bus and decided to find a place to stay. The hostel we chose was a little bit dirty
11
but we still liked it because it was close to the coolest places in Manhattan.

C We left our bags in our room and went down into the street, found a nice little café
13
and sat down. It was so cool just to sit there, watch all the people passing by and enjoy
14
a delicious lunch. We sat there for a while and said to each other, “Can you believe it?
15
We are actually in New York!”

D In the afternoon we started to do some sightseeing, like all the other tourists. Bad
17
idea! After a long walk to the Empire State Building we took the elevator to the 86th
18
floor. There we found that it was even windier and colder than we had expected. Dis-
19
appointed, we went back down and decided to grab some street food for dinner. We
20
could choose between hot dogs, pretzels or pizza and many other interesting things to
21
eat. We agreed that the food you can buy on street corners was one of the coolest
22
things about New York. In the evening the weather was better and we decided to go
23
back to the top of the Empire State Building to see New York by night. With all its
24
colorful lights it was so amazing! Then we made our way back to our hostel and went
25
to bed.

E We woke up the next morning and wondered where we were. Then we heard the
27
noise of the traffic and remembered that we were in the center of Manhattan. After
28
breakfast we wanted to do a bit more sightseeing. Our plan was to visit the Statue of
29
Liberty. We went to the place where the ferry leaves for Liberty Island. But when we
30
saw hundreds of tourists waiting for the next boat we went shopping instead. So the
31
rest of our day was filled with shopping, taxis, more cafés and fast food. We even took
32
a ride through Central Park in a horse-drawn carriage, which was our highlight of the
33
day. In the evening we enjoyed a delicious pizza in a fine Italian restaurant. We both
34
agreed that we did not need too much of the typical tourist program because above all
35
we wanted to feel the atmosphere of this exciting city.

F The next day – our last day in New York – we first wanted to see the Rockefeller
37
Center. We went to the observation deck and it felt great to look down on the entire
38
city. We took about a thousand pictures and then we set off for some more shopping.

Of course we got tired from all the walking, so we did not visit the Museum of Modern
40
Art but decided to take the subway back. The subway is another unique New York
41
experience: It may be noisy and a little bit scary but it is never boring – you meet all
42
kinds of people there, different looks, lifestyles and cultures.

G In the late afternoon Emma and I returned to our hostel to pack because we had to
44
go back home that evening. We really did not want to leave at all! New York was the
45
best experience ever. It was always alive and I guess that this is why they call it ‘the city
46
that never sleeps’. On the bus back home, Emma and I promised each other: “When
47
we finish high school, we will go back to New York and live in an apartment together.”

Now – four years later – we still have not left our home town. New York, wait for us!
