Being a scout in the city

Hi, my name is Kim and I (0 LIFE) live in the centre of London. I (1 RECENT) _______________________________________ joined a scout group, and I want to tell you about it. We always meet at a local (2 COMMON) _______________________________________ centre and learn practical things. The scout leaders teach the new ones how to tie (3 DIFFERENCE) _______________________________________ knots, put up tents, and even

to give first aid. My favourite (4 ACTIVE) _______________________________________ is when we go on camping trips outside the city. The best trip I have ever had was to Epping Forest. But right now I (5 LOOK) ______________________________________ forward to our next adventure. Next month we are going to go hiking in the mountains, using a map and working together to find the right route. At night, there will

be a campfire with (6 TASTE) _______________________________________ marshmallows. I am a new member of the group but I (7 ALREADY, MAKE) _______________________________________ a lot of new friends and everyone is very supportive. The scout-training program teaches (8 WE) _______________________________________ important skills, like teamworking and helping others. Last month, we (9 VOLUNTEER) _______________________________________ at a local charity event, helping to organize food for people in need. If you help others, you (10 FEELING) _______________________________________ better yourself. So why don’t you become a scout? It is a great way to have fun!

My experience with the volunteer fire brigade in the countryside

For me, as a 19-year-old village boy, it is a great privilege to be part (0) of the local fire brigade. My best friend, Jonas, has been a fire fighter (1) __________________ three years now. That is why I joined the fire brigade one year (2) __________________. Serving in the fire brigade is not only about fighting fires, climbing ladders, and rescuing people. It is much (3) __________________ than that. The fire brigade is also about doing something useful and sharing responsibility for village life. Last month, for example, the young people (4) __________________ live in the village arranged a summer festival. As fire-brigade members, we are used to working efficiently in a team. We were responsible for setting up little stalls, preparing the food, and organizing the music. Local events (5) __________________ these bring the villagers together and help us to get to know people better. Another special thing about the fire brigade is that we learn to rely on (6) __________________ other. When we go on firefighting operations, we need to be disciplined and

work together. Everyone is trained to know what they have to do and how to help the others if the situation gets dangerous or there is (7) __________________ emergency. You cannot do everything alone. That is (8) __________________ teamwork is so important. You need to understand ... teamwork saves lives.
