New roads for the USA

14^th Street in Detroit, Michigan, looks like any other stretch of asphalt, but it is actually the first public road in the US, where you can drive electric vehicles without draining their batteries – in fact, they get recharged.

Under the surface of the quarter-mile section of 14^th Street, there are coils – wires arranged in spirals – connected to the city’s power grid. They create an electromagnetic field just above the road that transfers energy to the battery of the vehicle if the battery has a receiver attached. So, the technology used for charging the vehicle battery while driving along the electrified stretch of 14^th Street is very much the same as the technology used in the wireless charging of mobile phones or electric toothbrushes.

The hope is that more electrified roads in the US may help to overcome one of the major barriers that keep people from switching to electric vehicles. However, according to critics, long-term operating costs for roads like the one in Detroit are unpredictable and especially smaller roads seem to be vulnerable to damage due to the weight of electric vehicles.

Am ersten Tag musste ich mich an der Pforte anmelden und bekam meine Arbeitskleidung sowie eine Einweisung in die Hygienevorschriften.
