E-sports – From zero to hero

1
1 Some people may still remember a time when the image of a gamer was that of a person
2
sitting in front of a computer or console, wearing thick glasses and seldom leaving their room.
3
The stereotype of e-sports (short for electronic sports) players as “nerds” has been transformed
4
into one of professional players and even celebrities. Their journey into the world of e-sports
5
begins by playing their favourite games with friends. As they invest more time and effort into
6
mastering the games they love, they might discover their talent and ambition to compete at a
7
higher level. The development is similar to that of a young amateur athlete of traditional sports
8
who becomes an Olympic competitor. It is demanding and requires commitment, discipline
9
and a deep understanding of the games. Players often spend several hours a day improving
10
their skills.
11
2 But, in addition to their mental and gaming skills, players now recognise that they need to
12
be physically fit if they want to compete at the highest levels in the gaming world. Regular
13
exercise, such as weight-lifting and cardio training, prevents injuries. Food is important, too.
14
A balanced diet with lots of vegetables and proteins as well as proper rest are also essential
15
factors for top performance in the fast-paced world of e-sports. Yoga or meditation helps the
16
athletes to clear their minds, to stay focused and to prevent mental burn out.
17
3 Another aspect of professional gaming is participation in tournaments. They offer the oppor-
18
tunity to demonstrate one’s skills and gain recognition. In their ambition to become profes-
19
sional players, gamers must learn to deal with the pressure of competition and the presence of
20
spectators in both physical and digital arenas. E-sports events have transformed the digital
21
space into real ones with cheering spectators. Major tournaments attract thousands of fans who
22
come to witness the excitement in person.
23
4 Moreover, e-sports offer a good income for those who succeed at the highest level. As the
24
gaming industry has grown, so has the prize money for tournaments. Most successful players
25
can even earn a lot through sponsorship deals, streaming and merchandise sales. In addition
26
to the financial rewards, top players also become famous in the same way that traditional sports
27
stars do. They are invited to conventions and expos where they meet with fans, sign autographs
28
and share their experiences. Their fame extends to their online presence, where they have
29
millions of followers on social-media platforms. E-sports players use these platforms to give
30
their fans an insight into their lives and playing style as well as to stream their gaming sessions.
31
5 The rapid rise of e-sports has also led to the establishment of e-sports organisations and
32
leagues. These have brought the structure and stability oftraditionalsportsto the e-sports world,
33
creating an environment where players can build long-lasting careers. Traditional sports man-
34
agers, too, have recognised the immense potential of competitive gaming. Many famous sports
35
clubs have created their own teams and have invested in e-sports.
36
6 Becoming a professional player, however, is not without its difficulties and uncertainties.
37
Upcoming e-athletes must be prepared to face real competition, setbacks and the pressure of
38
performing. The path is demanding and many who try it may not succeed. Accordingly, as
39
with any profession, it is essential to have a backup plan. Being successful in e-sports can be
40
relatively short-lived. Just as in traditional sports there are factors such as changing game
41
strategies and the appearance of new talent. Many professional e-sports players move on to
42
become coaches, commentators or content creators when their careers as active players end.
43
7 The positive impact of e-sports is increasingly being recognised within schools. Some
44
schools have integrated e-sports into STEM programmes (Science, Technology, Engineering
45
and Mathematics). Students who might struggle with traditional teaching could find new mo-
46
tivation through e-sports-related learning opportunities. This means learning can take various
47
forms and different skills and talents are equally valuable. Moreover, e-sports bring together
48
students who share a common interest. Schools now have e-sports teams and clubs where
49
students can not only compete but also develop important skills such as critical thinking and
50
strategic planning.
